Kratom has been removed from Thailand's narcotics list following publication in the Government Gazette.
The plant has long been used in Thailand as traditional medicine. However, it can also be mixed with cough medicine and used as a recreational drug, which is why it had previously been classed as a narcotic.
The removal of kratom as a narcotic will enable police to focus on more serious crime, lawmakers were told in a review of the narcotics bill earlier this year.
Legalising kratom also opens up the possibility for farmers to earn an income by growing the crop, as well as private companies to sell products in Thailand and for exports.
The legalisation of kratom will become law in 90 days, PPTV reported.
